What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

I like to cycle through things — wear them a ton and then move on — so I don’t get too attached to particular pieces. One thing I love is a vintage Beastie Boys t-shirt that I bought at a concert in 1995. I wear black and white Bass Enfield’s all the time, I have become kind of known for those. I walked in NY Fashion Week for Daryl K last year and she gave me the most delicious pair of leather leggings that you ever want to feel. She told me I’d live in them, I thought “who lives in leather leggings??” but she was right, I wear them everywhere.

Please describe your style in three words.

Girly, edgy, cool.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

Trying too hard.

Do you believe in role models?

Yes — Questlove is my role model as far as being a cultural ambassador and musical encyclopedia. Everything I do as a DJ I always think “Would Ahmir think this is hot?”

What are your favourite fabrics?

Leather and denim.

Are there any style combinations that you object to?

Shorts with tights.

Which city has the best-dressed women?

New York or Shanghai.

What are the rules in the way you dress?

I like to mix different styles — masculine and feminine, girly things with tough things. My red hair is a big accessory, so I keep it simple beyond that accessory wise.

Celebrities and style...

Are big business.

Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?

Expensive lingerie.

A woman should always look like...

She’s cooler than you.

Who taught you what you know about style?

Gwen Stefani.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

It’s all based on what I have that day — an event, studio session, meetings. I always look like me but there’s on-stage me, business me, and songwriter me — three pages of the catalogue.

What is your biggest regret?

My first tattoo. I’ll never show it.

The three essential things a woman should know about style are...

Don’t follow trends, celebrate who you are, like what you like.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

I buy a lot online, try it all on, keep what I like and return the rest.

We will never see you wearing...

Crazy heels. They look sexy but I can’t feel the music six inches from the ground.

Which new designers do you follow and why?

I love Erin Fetherston — I think she really hits that real girly/edgy sweet spot which is my style for sure. I wear a lot of Sandro and Maje these days as well. Mulberry for bags.

Who is the most stylish person you have ever seen?

I take a lot of my style cues from Gwen Stefani.

What is the first thing you notice on a woman?

Her hair. My hair is my signature accessory so I always notice that on other women.

The one image that defined your approach to style...

I am always really attracted to androgyny in photos. I like to mix masculine and feminine when I’m dressing, that always looks sexy to me.

Which designer never fails to impress you?

Erin Fetherston. She’s a definite favourite.

One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is...

Her bra.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

Definitely not. If you’re not comfortable you don’t feel confident, and if you don’t feel confident you don’t look good, no matter what you’re wearing.

Who would you like to recommend for My Style€?

Jahi Sundance, a Los Angeles-based producer that I’ve known for a long time. He always looks fly.

The best words of advice you have ever heard?

Walk through the doors that open to you.
