Which new designers do you follow and why?

I love Burkman Brothers for their boho preppy cool. It reminds me of boarding school and being in the woods smoking pot. For the record, I was booted from boarding school for being a bad boy.

Please describe your style in three words.

Preppy, punk, unconventional.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

Dressing for anyone else but oneself.

Do you believe in role models?

Of course. My style role models are Mark Ronson and the late, great Amy Winehouse.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Cotton, cashmere, and anything that isn’t itchy or made of fur.

Are there any style combinations that you object to?

I really dislike fur. Fur is meant for the forest, not the catwalk.

Which city has the best-dressed men?

London because of all the great tailors, like mine: Timothy Everest.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

Bold.

What are the rules, if any, in the way you dress?

I dress to make myself happy and comfortable.

Celebrities and style...

Are usually an awful combination, thus the celebrity stylist is in high demand.

One garment/accessory that you can never have enough of.

Sunglasses.

A man should always look like...

He is overdressed and never underdressed for every occasion.

Who taught you what you know about style?

The streets of Manhattan, where I grew up.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

I open the window, feel the weather, pick out a jacket, and go from there.

Your biggest regret is...

That nothing fits me in Tokyo. I am a size 11 shoe which is like King Kong to the Japanese.

The three essential things a man should know about style are...

Have a great black tie; never wear too much jewellery; and don’t dress like you’re thirteen when you’re thirty one.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

I always go to the same places, and I always know if I like something the second I see it. I never second guess.

We will never see you wearing...

Sandals.

The most stylish person you have ever seen...

The late Fred Hughes, who ran the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

What is the first thing you notice on a man?

His shoes.

The one image that defined your approach to style...

Good shoes. Bad shoes equal bad style.

The only article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to is...

A black tie, which should fit perfectly and never be worn with anything but a bow tie.

What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

My vintage Perfecto leather jacket, a Michael Bastian plaid evening jacket and my circa 1967 Persol sunglasses.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

Never. If you look uncomfortable, you look unstylish.

Which designer never fails to impress you?

Michael Bastian, Burkman Brothers, Del Toro and Mark McNairy for shoes, Martin Margiela.

Who would you like to see next in My Style€?

Mark Ronson and Chris Glancy, who designs an amazing line of jewellery in Los Angeles called Cast of Vices.

The best word of advice you have ever heard?

Wear whatever makes you happy.
