How do you select your clothing every morning?

I have been streamlining my wardrobe into basic solid colours of navy blue, black and white. It has been such an efficient approach to getting dressed. All the combinations just work together, regardless. And I think I have worn the same white Martin Margiela shoes every day for the past two and a half years.

Please describe your style in three words.

Understated, solid, utilitarian.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

By doing it in the dark. Trust me — this happens more often than you think.

Do you believe in role models?

No. It’s always disappointing in the end.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Silk and cotton mix, and a good linen.

Are there any style combinations that you object to?

Try not to be too matchy-matchy. A hint of unexpectedness never hurt anybody.

Which city has the best-dressed men?

Tokyo and Milan.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

Conservative with a hint of whimsy.

What are the rules, if any, in the way you dress?

Solids. It’s all about a good solid, strong, dark colour for me these days.

Celebrities and style...

Are not always the best bedfellows.

One garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?

Goyard pouches/envelopes. I will always find sets of something to keep in them.

A man should always look like...

A man.

Who taught you what you know about style?

My aunt, my grandmother, and my mother. They believed you invest in a wardrobe, not buy one. Trends don’t really mean anything to them and I love that.

Your biggest regret is...

Never having enough Dries (Editor's note: Dries Van Noten).

The three essential things a man should know about style are...

Simplicity is key. It’s all about the cut. Leave some things well alone for the girls.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

None. I usually shop quite serendipitously.

We will never see you wearing...

Leopard prints.

The most stylish person you have ever seen...

My cousin Tania. Her understanding of style is impeccable.

What is the first thing you notice on a man?

This answer is probably not fit to print.

The one image that defined your approach to style...

Pick any image from the movie A Single Man. I want my whole visual aesthetic to be like that.

The only article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to is...

His pants. Bad pants can take over everything.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

Not at all. In fact, they should be soul mates.

The best word of advice you have ever heard?

Worrying is like praying for what you don’t want to happen, to happen.
