Are there any style combinations that you object to?

Even if I named the most absurd combo imaginable, I'm positive you could find some Japanese teenager who pulled it off effortlessly.

Please describe your style in three words.

Inconspicuous, familiar, and functional.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

Trying to look like someone else.

Do you believe in role models?

Let's just say I prefer inspiration over influence.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Looped cotton, waffle-knit cashmere, and washed leather.

Which city has the best-dressed men?

Tokyo.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

I honestly don't perceive myself to be either.

What are the rules in the way you dress?

Merely that I own less clothing than anyone I've ever met. Everything goes with everything.

Celebrities and style...

Aren't really on my radar.

Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?

Socks. I tried wearing my sneakers for awhile without them, and it was a bad scene.

A man should always look like…

He can break into a run if necessary.

Who taught you what you know about style?

I'm afraid I can't think of anyone.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

I let the weather make my decisions for me.

What is your biggest regret?

Not leaving home when I was twelve.

The three essential things a man should know about style are…

If you treat people well, no one will care what you're wearing.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

I always try to find things which are second-hand first.

We will never see you wearing…

Never say never.

The most stylish person you have ever seen…

Yohji Yamamoto, obviously.

What is the first thing you notice on a man?

His face.

The one image that defined your approach to style…

I always think of animals in the wild…going through their lives with one, perfect look.

The only article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to is…

Men should pay closer attention to their hearts.

What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

I have an old Rat Fink tank top that I found for $4 in a bin. I hope I never lose it.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

Comfort is everyone's best friend. Unless someone is paying you to wear it, your clothing should feel great.

Which designer never fails to impress you?

Yohji Yamamoto.

Who would you like to recommend for My Style?

Nick Koenigsknecht and Alex Hawgood.

The best words of advice you have ever heard?

Happiness is like sadness—it comes and goes. Seek understanding instead, even if it doesn't always make you happy.
