My Style: Nicole Huisman

Please describe your style in three words.

Good vibes only.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

Wearing clothes that are too small; that and over-styling.

Do you believe in role models?

Hell yes! My favourite inspiration is Françoise Hardy; so, so cool.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Velvet, for sure. Especially in the form of flared pants or a slip dress.

Are there any style combinations that you object to?

I think fur is totally unnecessary.

Which city has the best-dressed women?

Cheesy, but true—I have to say Paris. No one does Breton stripes like those girls do.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

BOLD.

What are the rules in the way you dress?

Feel comfortable, stay warm, and look fresh.

Celebrities and style...

Don’t interest me that much (sorry, Kim K.).

Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?

Loafers! They make you look sexy, well-dressed and cool whilst feeling like you’re wearing slippers.

A woman should always look like…

A million dollars. I think you can still look crazy cool in sweats and sneakers with a ponytail on a hangover Saturday.

Who taught you what you know about style?

My mom always let me experiment with clothes in my younger years, and ELLE's Fashion Director Esther Coppoolse showed me things I never had an eye for before.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

Intuitively.

The three essential things a woman should know about style are…

The best T-shirts in the world are available in the men's department. You look instantly chic in a long, camel coat. When your outfit feels boring, a bold lipstick will save the day.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

I'm a true sales shopper. Also I prefer to shop alone and (almost) never online. Besides that, I always let a 'new-closet-friend-to-be' sink in for a few days before I actually buy it.

We will never see you wearing...

A wide, medium length A-line skirt. It makes me look like a fat gnome.

Which new designers do you follow and why?

I really like the work of Dutch designer Peet Dullaert. The way he works with colours, materials and glitter really fits my taste.

Who is the most stylish person you have ever seen?

Sweetheart Sabrina Meijer (effortless chic, any time) and my dear friend and stylist-college Thomas Vermeer. He always looks so damn crispy.

What is the first thing you notice on a woman?

Her smile.

What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

My patent leather blue Gucci loafers, my BLK DNM leather jacket, my Dolce & Gabbana leopard and glitter sling backs, my MiH boyfriend jeans, and my worn-out coral coloured Mulberry bag.

The one image that defined your approach to style...

Look #1 on the catwalk of my very first fashion show ever in Paris, Carven a few years ago.

Which fashion house never fails to impress you?

Carven, Miu Miu, Valentino, and Dries van Noten never disappoint.

One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is…

Jeans. A great ass is a good start for that.

Is comfort an enemy of style?

Never!

Who would you like to recommend for My Style?

Thomas Vermeer, Esther Coppoolse, and model slash cool girl Yana Bovenistier—love her 90's vibe!

The best words of advice you have ever heard?

Work like a captain, play like a pirate.
