Is comfort an enemy of style?

Style should be comfortable… it may take a little longer to find the perfect heel or the right tailoring, but you only feel amazing when you are comfortable. I am horrified by some of the things people do to “look” good.

Please describe your style in three words.

Scandinavian minimal with a bit of rock and roll.

What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?

Doing it in the dark…

Do you believe in role models?

Yes, Audrey Hepburn for her style and humanity.

What are your favourite fabrics?

Cashmere, denim, and cotton.

Are there any style combinations that you object to?

I don’t like everything tight or loose, I like balanced proportions.

Which city has the best-dressed women?

Paris.

Would you say that you are conservative or bold?

Conservative.

What are the rules in the way you dress?

Keep it simple.

Celebrities and style...

Are not my definition of fashion.

How do you select your clothing every morning?

I plan at night, based on the activities of the next day.

What is your biggest regret?

Being too busy to be in the moment.

The three essential things a woman should know about style are...

Make it your own, keep it simple, and enjoy fashion.

Do you have any shopping rituals?

I can only shop with very few people in tow: my mother or two girlfriends.

We will never see you wearing...

Never say never, but it’s a good bet that it won’t be ruffles.

Which new designers do you follow and why?

I like designers who think uniquely.

Who is the most stylish person you have ever seen?

I love Patti Hansen’s style… she looks amazing.

What is the first thing you notice on a woman?

Her shoes.

What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?

My Stephen Sprouse reversible fuschia and black coat-dress and my Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo.

Balmain, Dries Van Noten, and Jil Sander.

One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is...

Her lingerie.
